A former merchant navy is looking for his lost love. Don Ormiston almost jumped ship after he met 17-year-old Wendy in Suva 66 years ago.

But he decided not to and returned to Canada, and left the navy. His heart though was still in Fiji.  Despite Wendy’s letter to him three months later saying she had married a Mr Williams, the former navy man – even to this day – remains hopeful that he will find his Fijian love.

Here is what he wrote to the Fiji Sun:

“I realise this is a long shot but I was wondering if you would put out a short story in your newspaper to try and locate Wendy or someone in her family. I would just like to know if she is still alive and how she is doing.

“I was stationed in Suva back in 1949 while in the merchant navy.  I met a young lady by the name of Wendy Reed/Reid/Read and fell in love. I was going to jump ship to stay with her but in the end I decided not to do that. I did cause the ship a late departure and so when I got home to Canada my life in the merchant navy was over.”

Mr Ormiston recalls that Wendy’s father worked as book-keeper for Morris Hedstrom.

“They also lived very close to the harbour. Wendy had a sister called Susan.”

Even after getting married in Canada, Mr Ormiston named his first daughter, Wendy.

Mr Ormiston is now a widower and is anxious to find out if Wendy is still alive.

“I would also like to make contact even if it is through a child she may have,” he said.
