The Government has doubled its allocation for rural housing assistance this year.

This shows its continuous commitment to alleviating poverty and lifting living standards in rural communities.

The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Acting Permanent Secretary, Setareki Tale, said the increase from $700,000 in 2014 to $1.4 million this year marks Government’s increased efforts in this regard.

“One of the broad aims of the rural housing programme is to eliminate homelessness in rural Fiji through the provision of affordable, durable, and cyclone-resistant homes,” Mr Tale said.

“This increased allocation will allow more construction of safer and durable homes for rural families,” he said.

Mr Tale said while the target number of houses would increase, they have also ensured that they produced quality homes.

“Each standard home under the scheme costs $18,307.19. One-third contribution of $6,102.43 should be met by the applicant while the scheme provides the other two-thirds of the cost.”

Information and application forms for the rural housing scheme are available throughout our district, provincial and divisional offices.
