Love without action is dead.

These were the words of 80-year-old war veteran, Jone Velivai after receiving his cheque from the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama last Friday at the Civic Centre in Suva.

“I was part of the army for more than 12 years,” Mr Velivai said.

“After my service at Christmas Island from 1959 onwards, I also lost my beloved wife and I know it was the side effects from the nuclear testing,”he said.

Mr Velivai thanked Government for helping war veterans.

“I have waited for more than 60 years for this day. I am thankful that I could live to witness this.”

Families and friends of the 24 war veterans were part of the joyous occasion which included Mr Bainimarama, Government ministers Jioji Konrote and Timoci Natuva, RFMF Commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga and some of his top officers.

Seventy-nine year old Emori Ligaica of Vugalei in Tailevu also felt the same way.

“This cheque of $9855 will be used to renovate my house and also for my family’s welfare,” Mr Ligaica said.
