The phase that a dog is a mans best friend has a great deal of truth. They are smart and make life easier for many.

Plans by Government to increase the number of sniffer dogs around our ports (airport and local jetties, wharfs) should be commended. But work needs to start now.

Illegal drug cultivation, peddling and transition is increasing around the country with druggies taking advantage of loop holes.

The introduction of sniffer dogs will certainly address this.

In North Wales just three days ago 10 sniffer dogs detected 2.5 million worth of illicit tobacco. They were hidden in places like false walls, under floor boards and some were wrapped in scents that were supposed to deter dogs such as curry powder, air fresheners and coffee.

But the dogs were trained for those exact scenarios.

Our Minister for Defence has said that we will need the assistance of the international community to train our sniffer dogs.

This will enable them to sniff out not just drugs but also cash, explosives and more.

Nancy F Castaldo in her book Sniffer Dogs – How Dogs and Their Noses Save the World describe dogs as “special because they smell the same way people hear. Dogs’ noses have 300million sensory neurons while humans have only 6 million.”

Once trained, these sniffer dogs are bound to do wonders. Coupled with trained staff promised for our ports and more patrol boats, we may well be on our way to achieving the ideal – a drug-free Fiji.
