Unprecedented interests have been recorded for the first trade union elections under new rules.

The Coral Coast Tourism & Catering Workers Union (CCT & CWU) will hold its elections on February 14 at Navau, Nadroga.

The Fijian Elections Office supervised elections are designed to encourage transparency and uphold integrity of the processes.

The high number of candidates contesting the elections is indicative of the confidence they have in the new system.

Previously when trade unions held their own elections, some of the officials were elected unopposed. As a result they have held the positions for a long period.

The new system encourages more participation by union members. It also sets the tone for the rest of the trade union elections.

Eight candidates are contesting the president post. They are: Aminiasi Koroi, Asesela Turagadrau, Pauliasi Nagusa, Inoke Momonakaya, Misiwata Rawaiqari, Seruwaia Roselyn Navutu, Solomoni Tuqiri Maiqovu, Viliame Tani.

For vice-president, 10 applied, 1 was rejected. They are: Misiwata Rawaiqari (rejected), Apisai Tawalo, Asesela Turagadrau, Voliti Vilorina Tuqiri, Solomoni Tuqiri Maiqovu, Rajesh Kumar, Temesia Rakuma, Pauliasi Nagusa, Masi Vuidravuwalu, Viliame Tani.

For national secretary, four applied, 1 was rejected. They are: Elena Malai (rejected), Viliame Tani, Mele Walai, Akuila Senibua.

Eight applied for general treasurer. They are: Merelita Tuinivanua, Kiniviliame Kamikamica, Rajesh Kumar, Wame Bainivanua, Masi Vuidravuwalu, Vitalina Lewaivu, Temesia Rakuma, Makitalena Naisau.

Any objections will be looked at today.

One of the candidates for the president post, Pauliasi Nagusa, said yesterday he was excited to be contesting the election.

Mr Nagusa said they broke away from their old union to form the new union because they were not happy with its service.

Viliame Tani said he was contesting the general secretary position. He has been acting in the position since the death of the former holder Kalivati Batibasaga.

Mr Tani said he was hopeful more workers from other hotels on the Coral Coast would join the union. He said village elders on the coast wanted their people who worked in hotels to come together in solidarity and join the new union.

The Warwick Resort and Spa Hotel workers formed CCTCWU in 2013 after they were dissatisfied with their old union, Union of Hospitality, Catering and Tourism Industries Employees led by Daniel Urai.

Alifereti Katonivere, the president, is not seeking re-election.

The Fiji Teachers Union and the Fijian Teachers Association will follow the CCT & CWU election.
