Ratu Jone Raravisa has proven that disability should not stop people from achieving their goals.

Deaf student Ratu Jone was among the 1278 students who graduated yesterday from the University of the South Pacific’s College of Foundation Studies and Pacific Technical and Further Education programmes at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

The former student of Gospel High School was one of 27 students who graduated with a Certificate in Information Technology.

The 22 year old believes entering the programme was God’s plan for him.

“I’ve always had an interest for computers and the Fiji Association for the Deaf recommended I took up the course,” Ratu Jone said.

However, the Naitasiri native from Naseuvou, Waidina, said year-long study was no easy ride.

“It required a lot of hard work, the assignments were difficult but I enjoyed the lab work very much,” Ratu Jone said.

He thanked USP for employing interpreters.

“They made learning very easy for us,” Ratu Jone said.

Coming from a farming background he believes people with disabilities should never settle for less.

“I guess I’ve always had the passion to strive for higher things, if I can do it then anyone can,” Ratu Jone said.

He plans to further his studies this year and do a Diploma programme in Information Technology.

His father Ratu Leone Raidola said emotionally: “Our son has reached a place where we never thought he could reach. People had looked down on him because of his disability and cast him aside and I thank the Lord for helping Jone prove himself.”
