Naiyaga Takes Insurance Helm

The Insurance Council of Fiji has appointed Malakai Naiyaga, BSP Life’s managing director, as its new chairperson.

Mr Naiyaga replaces Matthew Kearns, former general manager of QBE (Fiji) Limited, who has been appointed as general manager of QBE PNG.

Mr Naiyaga has previously served in various senior management and executive roles within the Colonial Fiji Group between 1987 and 2004 before being seconded into Commonwealth Bank of Australia Indonesia where he served for approximately six years.

He was president director and chief executive officer of Commonwealth Life for three years before progressing into the banking business of CBA Indonesia as general manager strategic business development.

Mr Naiyaga returned to Fiji in 2010 as managing director of BSP Life (Fiji) Limited.

The membership of the Insurance Council comprises all general and life insurance companies in Fiji. Its purpose is to advocate on issues involving the insurance industry. It also provides feed-back to regulators on industry standards and policy development .

In announcing his replacement, Mr Kearns stated: “During my three years in Fiji, I have enjoyed the privileges of living in a friendly and safe environment. There have been many challenges for the insurance industry. I consider it a privilege to have been chairman of the Insurance Council for the past two years.”

In accepting the new appointment, Mr Naiyaga stressed the need for the Insurance Council to work on educating the general public of the important roles insurance companies played in nation building.
