No Weapons Deal With Russia

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has never had any weapons deal with Russia, says RFMF Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho.

“Russia had never supplied any weapons to the RFMF,” Colonel Qiliho clarified yesterday.

He was reacting to a Radio New Zealand News broadcast saying that Russia was likely to sell military weapons to Fiji after an agreement was signed between the two nations.

“We have not signed anything with Russia,” he said.

In 2013, RBTH Asia reported that a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry had confirmed, “Preliminary negotiations on Russia supplying combat gear to Fijian soldiers were held in Moscow at the level of experts, but no final decision has been reached.”

RBTH Asia goes on to say: “The Fijians will probably be offered the new Ratnik individual combat kits, which are currently undergoing field trials and will soon enter service with the Russian armed forces,” says Dmitry Litovkin, a Russian military expert.

The standard individual kit, which is issued to peacekeepers in accordance with international regulations, includes a special uniform, a protective helmet, a gas mask, and a special load-bearing vest, which distributes the weight of the equipment carried by peacekeepers across their whole body. The mandatory equipment also includes communication gear, surveillance instruments, and small arms.

Colonel Qiliho said the article was also news to them and confirmed there was no such deal.
