The Minister for Health, Jone Usamate, visited the health centres at Nailaga and Balevuto in Ba last Friday.

Moreso, the Balevuto Health Centre impressed him the most.

Mr Usumate was impressed with the state of the Balevuto Health Centre and its service delivery.

“Balevuto has been a revelation to me. It’s very orderly, very nicely kept, it has a good team spirit, and I was very impressed with it,” the minister said.

Visiting two extremes, Mr Usamate said: “Nailaga, the facilities are very old. There is a need to have good facility in Nailaga because of the population that it serves.

“The facilities and the quarters in which the people live in, is bad. If a staff is living in a quarters that is bad, then that will affect the service.

“Balevuto is absolutely excellent, in terms of facilities but at Nailaga, it’s a big challenge.

“The Government’s strategy is to bring the health to the people; it means we have places all over Fiji so it’s a big challenge to keep them going.”

Based on the on-going consultations, some of the repeated issues arising are service delivery, medicines and waiting time.

The Health Ministry has taken on board these issues as major projects to make amends this year.

“We need more doctors and nurses, we need more space to put them in and also we need to improve on our system for medicines to be available in the pharmacies.

“They need good information systems, so if all these facilities are not connected by internet then the information cannot get to the pharmacy in Suva, so there’s a problem with the distribution.”

The ministry is also encouraging the public, who fall in the eligibility group, to register for the free medication scheme at any health facility.
