The Vodafone Fiji 7s team is in third place in the HSBC Sevens World Series in Wellington after winning the Plate final, beating Australia 24-0 at Westpac Stadium in New Zealand yesterday.

After the fourth leg, Fiji sits on 64 points behind South Africa, 76, and New Zealand, 69.

The Cup quarterfinals saw Fiji take on England in what was a thrilling match, basic errors, poor ball-handling skills and the lack of discipline played a major role in Fiji bowing out 21-26.

With the aim of finishing in the top four to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, a win against USA in the Plate semifinals was a must for Fiji.

A newly-revamped USA side made it difficult for Fiji to qualify for the finals as Fijian-born Andrew Durutalo showed his Fijian flair scoring

USA’s second try to put them ahead 10-7.

This was a wake-up call for the Fijians as time was slipping through their hands, Vatemo Ravouvou pulled through for Fiji scoring their last try of the match winning the game 12-10 to send them through to the Plate finals.

The next leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series will take place in the United States this weekend at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

Fiji is in pool A with New Zealand, Wales and Samoa.
