The Ministry of Education has endorsed girls rugby competition in schools, says Radrodro Tabualevu

The Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer said the plan was to have 7s tournament for Under-17 and U19 grades in Term Two of the school calendar.

“We are now laying the groundwork for this,” Tabualevu said.

“A lot has to be done especially when most of these girls have yet to try out the sport but the FRU will use the Get Into Rugby programme (GIR) as a tool to start it off this term.”

Newly- appointed Women’s Rugby development officer Vela Naucikidi is spearheading the move. Naucikidi will meet with the Fiji Secondary School’s Rugby Union soon to discuss the most effective way to run the competition.

Tabualevu also confirmed Naucikidi is also working on lining up scholarships for players to study and play in the United States.

Deans Competition

There are plans are for the Provincial Unions to include Under- 15, U17 and U19 grades in their competition while schools to play for U14, U16 and U18 grades.

“We will want to discuss this with the stakeholders and the Fiji Secondary Schools RugbyUnion and we are confident that this will help us,” Tabualevu said.

“So far the Deans competition has been dominated by major schools and minor schools are left out but when we look at our national team now most of the players come from the island like Bua and West students who don’t always come from major school,” Tabualevu said.
