169 Children In State Care

More than 160 children are under state care, the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar confirmed.

“We have a total of 169 children that are kept at residential homes around the country,” Ms Akbar said.

“Most of the children that are in state care are there because they were either abandoned by their families or neglected and abused.”

Government had increased the monthly care and protection allowance for children under its care from $60 to $100 per month.

Ms Akbar said they were working with residential homes to ensure that the children were well looked after.

“Through our care and protection programme, we are currently assisting 5000 children,” the Minister said.

Most of these children come from family background with single parent, prisoner dependent or are being looked after by a guardian or foster parent.
