Association To Continue FTUC Battle

The fight is not over yet between the Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA) and two top Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) officials.

The FPSA plans to seek a court declaration that the election of President Daniel Urai and general secretary Felix Anthony was null and void.

It contends that the two trade unionists’ return to their jobs in their respective unions,  Mr Urai as general secretary of the Union of Tourism, Hospitality and Catering Employees – and – Mr Anthony as general secretary of the Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union – was unconstitutional. If it was unconstitutional then their election to the FTUC positions was also unconstitutional and therefore null and void.

The FPSA will also seek a ruling on the status of the FTUC. It is not registered as a trade union or company. The FPSA filed two motions at the FTUC bi-ennial conference. They were both defeated. The motions discussed Mr Urai and Mr Anthony’s roles. They wanted the FTUC to change direction and stop its confrontational stance against the Government.
