The Fiji National University has also joined the fight against dengue.

Last week, the university organised a clean-up drive at all its campuses nationwide. The clean-up project is called ‘The Big Clean’.

FNU Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Ian Rouse said the project would also contribute to ensuring that their working and learning environment was a pleasant one to work in.

“I wanted to try and clean up all of our campuses around Fiji to make them more attractive for students and staff.  I was keen to get some activity that helped to create some excitement amongst staff and to get them having greater pride for their workplace,” Professor Rouse said.

“Then I saw the reports in the papers about dengue cases being reported in a number of areas.  In 2014 there was a major problem with dengue and many FNU staff and students contracted the disease and were ill for long periods of time. So I thought, lets clean up, and let’s do our part to remove places where dengue mosquitoes breed.”

Although the project was simple, he said it had a huge impact on the eradication of mosquito breeding places around the university.

More than a 100 university staff and students took part in the clean-up drive.
