The redeployment of Fijian soldiers from the Golan Heights to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon UNIFIL will take place today.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Land Force Commander (LFC), Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho said Israel and Lebanon were still negotiating some matters – as a result there was a hold up. The 146 members of the 1st Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment now in the Golan Heights were scheduled for re-deployment on February 5 to Ros Hanikra, the boarder between Lebanon and Israel. However, Colonel Qiliho said that has been delayed and the troops would move today.

He said the 146 soldiers would complete their term at the UNIFIL while the others would remain at Camp Ziouani in Israel. Both the troops at the UNIFIL and at the Golan Heights would complete their terms this year and return. The replacements would be sent in from Fiji.

He said the RFMF’s presence in the Golan Heights would remain.

The Commanding Officer (CO) for the troops to UNIFIL will be Major Atunaisa Vakatale. He will be assisted by Captain Mafi Kolinisau who was recently promoted during the farewell parade at Camp Ziouani, Israel.

Meanwhile, the RFMF will conduct a Commanding Officer (CO) Handover Parade at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks (QEB) Drill Square today.

The outgoing Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Manoa Gadai will be handing over the post of CO 3FIR to Major Petero Talemaivatuiri.
