Rakiraki Town Special Administrator Ralulu Cirikiyasawa hopes that dredging works at the Penang River will start soon.

“We hope the Government will provide funding for the dredging works to take place at the Penang River soon,” Mr Cirikiyasawa said.

“We are also hoping that this dredging takes place at least by year 2016 as consultations has already been carried out through the support of the Department of Environment.”

The water level at Penang River, which passes through Rakiraki Town, rises with extreme speed when it rains heavily and eventually floods the little town.

Mr Cirikiyasawa hopes discussions soon turns into action as this will reduce the flooding problem for the commuters and residents of Rakiraki.

“It is imperative that the sooner the developments take place on the river, the better for us,” Mr Cirikiyasawa said.

The council is also looking at development works on the outskirts of Rakiraki town like Volivoli Beach and Golden Point.

“Development on both sides of the town will bring about a positive impact on our town as we are situated in between these two points,” he said.

These tourism developments is said to cost around F$50million.
