The Fijian Government has expressed gratitude to the Church of Nazarene for its partnership in making Fiji’s beggar rehabilitation centre a reality for the less fortunate.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, made these remarks while delivering her ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday.

The Church had teamed up with Government in setting up a rehabilitation centre.

“The completion of this project demonstrates that through collaborative efforts like this a society have the power to positively change the lives of those that have fallen victims to such predicaments in life,” Ms Akbar said.

“The Fijian Government welcomes different levels of partnership to positively transform the lives of the less fortunate in our society.

“The successful completion of this much awaited initiative is the culmination of the many discussions, planning and sacrifices that has now shown fruition in the establishment of a development facility designed to empower the less fortunate, an initiative initially mooted by the Hon. Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama”.

Ms Akbar reiterated that the Fijian Government encourages partnerships to make a greater impact in the lives of the disadvantaged in our society.

“The Good Samaritan Inn, beautifully located in the green hills of Colo-i-Suva, is now a home for four able-bodied men who used to beg on the streets for a living,” she said.

“Eleven more able bodied individuals who are in most need of love and acceptance will undergo four months skills development programme to comprehensively transform their lives, they will be equipped with the skills and tools to establish sustainable livelihood programmes.

“In great collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture, farm skills by the able bodied individuals will be used to bring out agricultural produce for our markets.”
