Free Water Costs Negligible: Tikoduadua

The costs of footing the free water initiative by the Voreqe Bainimarama-led Government are negligible, says Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Pio Tikoduadua.

He said Government was firmly committed to delivering essential services to all Fijians, especially to underprivileged Fijian families.

Mr Tikoduadua yesterday pointed out that Fiji’s water tariff is already one of the cheapest in the world.

“This free water initiative by the FijiFirst Government is unprecedented in the history of this country and may I say in the region. This free water, under the current water tariff would equate to 23 units at 15 cents per unit which is equal to $3.45 per quarter, “Mr Tikoduadua said.

He pointed out that the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) was advertising the free water initiative widely for households with a combined income of $30,000 or less.

“WAF has a three-month billing period. Therefore, the total amount of free water allocated to a customer equates to 23,000 litres (or 23 units) for 3 months. The first 23 units of water consumed in a quarter is free. Anything consumed in excess of this will be charged to the customer as part of his/her normal bill. Per annum each Fijian who qualifies under this free water initiative would receive 91,250 litres of water.”

Mr Tikoduadua was replying to a question in Parliament yesterday from Government backbencher Viam Pillay.

Free water applications received so far:

-Northern Division: 943 applicants; 900 approved .
-Western Division:5574 applicants; 1830 approved
-Central/Eastern Division: 3801 applicants; 1500 approved
