Golan Hostage Report For Parliament

Circumstances surrounding the capture and release of Fijian peacekeepers by Al-Nusra front militants in the Golan Heights last year will be detailed soon in a parliamentary report.

Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva revealed this in parliament yesterday in response to questions on the status of Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in the Golan Heights.

He said since the re-deployment of Fijian peacekeepers to the Israeli side of the Golan Heights there had been no major incidents in the area.

He credited Israeli forces with helping keep the peace since the troops redeployed to the area in September last year, after the release of the captured 45 Fijian troops from two weeks of captivity.

Questions about whether any ransom had been paid and why Fijian troops surrendered while Filipino troops fought back in the same area are expected to be addressed in the parliamentary report.
