How We Stand On Points Table

The Vodafone Fiji 7s team is in third position on the World Rugby 7s Series points table, with 64 points, after they won the Plate Final at the Wellington 7s over the weekend.

After day one of competition, Fiji remained unbeaten and topped their pool.   But the team was struck with a blow when Captain Osea Kolinisau and Semi Kunatani were cited for dangerous tackles and suspended for two matches.

Without the duo, the Fiji v England cup quarterfinal went in to sudden death extra time when the scores were leveled 21 all at full time.  But England’s Christian Lewis-Pratt broke the deadlock for England to advance to the cup final and Fiji relegated to the Plate Semis.

The Vodafone Fiji 7s team managed to beat USA 12 – 10, holding off a second-half fight-back from the Eagles to advance to the Plate final, against Australia.

Fiji was too strong for Australia scoring five unanswered tries in their 24-0 victory. A scoreless first half was looming before Fiji’s Osea Kolinisau broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time after a deft pass from Semi Kunatani gave the Pacific islanders a 7-0 lead. Fiji came out full of running in the second stanza, Sitiveni Waqa then Kunatani scoring in quick succession to shut Australia out. Samisoni Viriviri put an exclamation mark on the win with a late try.

Hosts New Zealand went on to win the tournament.

The next leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series will take place in the United States this weekend at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. Fiji is in pool A with New Zealand, Wales and Samoa.
