The handover of the Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) colours from outgoing commanding officer (CO), Lieutenant-Colonel Manoa Gadai to the current CO, Major Petero Talemaivatuiri comes with a huge responsibility.

Major Talemaivatuiri said he had been with the 3FIR since 1998 joining as a young Lieutenant and while he was happy to be the new CO of 3FIR and it would be challenging as well.

He said Lieutenant-Colonel Gadai had set a high standard for 3FIR and as its new CO he had to show the Land Force Commander, Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho, that he was capable of maintaining the high standards set by the outgoing CO.

Major Talemaivatuiri said he was ready for his new assignment.

Lieutenant-Colonel Gadai said: “I wish him all the best for taking over as CO 3FIR.”

The Land Force Commander, who witnessed the handover parade yesterday, reminded Major Talemaivatuiri of his new role.

He said 3FIR had been a major contributor to the peacekeeping duties and he commended them for that.

As members of the 3FIR, who are always stationed at the Queen Elizabeth’s Barracks in Nabua, they should set good examples to other battalions.

Colonel Qiliho also confirmed yesterday that Major Talemaivatuiri would be promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel at a later date.
