The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) supports the announcement made by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to change our national flag.

Speaking to Fiji Sun at Sawani Primary School yesterday, RFMF Commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga, who is also the chairman of the school, said it was time the British symbols were replaced with something indigenous and truly Fijian.

He said the RFMF peacekeepers were always proud to hoist the Fiji flag at their areas of operations to tell other peacekeepers where they were originally from.

The flag, he said, was their identity when serving abroad.

With their support for the new flag, the Commander said the RFMF was organising a flag design competition within the institution.

“A directive has been sent to all RFMF units around the country for the new flag design and a committee will be appointed to name the winner,” he said.

“The winner will get $500.”

The winning design will be submitted to the National Panel of Citizens – established by the Government and broadly representative of all Fijians.

He said the RFMF was looking forward to hoisting the new flag during the 45th anniversary of Fiji’s Independence on the October 10, 2015.

The Commander said the RFMF wanted to look to the future and not the past.

He said while the RFMF paid tribute to the British for what Britain had done to the institution and the nation, the new flag would make them even more proud in the field of peacekeeping and in other areas, they serve, as it would also signal the way forward Fiji was heading now.
