Amateur Boxing Fiji can now send boxers overseas after the 2008 Boxing Decree was amended in Parliament yesterday.

The amendment means amateur boxing is now separated from Boxing Commission Fiji and is now under the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC).

Amateur Boxing Fiji event co-ordinator Marika Yalimaiwai acknowledged the Government for their timely assistance.

“We’ve waited for a long time for this and our prayers have finally been answered,” Yalimaiwai said.

“There are international tournaments coming up which includes 2016 Rio Olympics, Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea and the Oceania Games which will be held later in the year.

“We also want to thank FASANOC for their support.”

Yalimaiwai said now their next move would be to hold a annual general meeting (AGM).

“What we will do now is to have AGM as soon as possible so that we can appoint the new committee and submit the names to International Boxing Association (AIBA) who will endorse the names,”he said.

Meanwhile, amateur boxing weekly programme continues at the National Fitness Centre this Saturday at 7pm.
