Flooding Concerns In Rakiraki

Issues concerning flooding in Rakiraki have been raised by the interim secretary of the Rakiraki Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dinesh Prasad

One of those issues of concern is the Rakiraki bridge which is easily prone to flooding during heavy rains.

“For two years people have suffering because of this bridge in Rakiraki,” Mr Prasad.

The secretary hopes to raise this concern further with Government and ensure the matter is pushed in order to get works started on the bridge.

After heavy rain last weekend, Mr Prasad said waters rose quickly in Rakiraki Town.

“The detour on the Kings Road which is now used by commuters lies in a low area. Therefore it gets flooded easily,” Mr Prasad said.

When the detour road gets flooded, people tend to become stranded in the Rakiraki Town, and are unable to return home.

Mr Prasad said: “Police come and tell people to go home during flooding but people cannot so they loiter around the streets.

“This therefore causes more robberies to the businesshouses in the town area.”

Other issues that the Chamber is looking into are infrastructure problems, high business and license rates and the cost of living in Rakiraki.

“Economy in Rakiraki is very low, people are more dependent on sugar and they find it difficult to cope, so they resort to other institutions for loans,” Mr Prasad said.

The interim council is scheduled to hold their next formal meeting by the end of the month and hopes that all businesshouses attend it.
