No Election Plan Yet For Sugar Council: PM

There is currently no plan in place to hold an election for the Sugar Growers Council says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

He was responding to a question raised by Opposition member, Prem Singh yesterday.

“No representations have been made by the growers to convene elections as they know the reason behind this,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“The administrative council of the sugar grower’s council continues to exist to provide assistance and as I said the council exists in order to serve the best interest of its members,” he said.

Prime Minister Bainimarama also stated that the special cane payment is not necessary for all cane farmers.

The question of as to why Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) refused  to pay a Special Cane Payment to farmers in January  and why the Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar did not direct FSC to make the special payment was raised by Opposition member,Biman Prasad.

“FSC is a body with its own government and management structure and the Corporation makes its own decision on financial governance fundamentals.

“Any special payment could have eroded away farmers and growers who normally get their assistance in the cane planting season around March and April this year,” he said.
