Municipal elections will take place once the Local Government Act is reviewed.

This was confirmed by Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Parveen Kumar yesterday.

He said the Act that is still in place is an outdated act; it was in place since 1972.

“There are so many priorities under my Ministry and one of it is the elections for municipal councils,” Mr Kumar said.

“The focus of review and reform process will be to improve the governance and service delivery of municipal councils and to enhance the local government process in Fiji,”he said.

Mr Kumar also informed the Parliament that plans to start work on Waila City is expected by this May.

He was responding to a question raised by Opposition member Salote Radrodro on the status of development of Waila City and confirmation of when the development was likely to complete.

“The completion of the development can only be confirmed once the first draft is completed.

“The Housing Authority Board together with its Malaysian partner has entered into a Master Agreement,”he said.
