The proposed streamlining for Tertiary Loan Scheme will not affect the terms of payment of loans to be made by students.

Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy was responding to a question raised by Opposition member, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua if the proposed streamlining in place will include changing the terms of student loans.

“The new online system developed will allow students, parents and stakeholders to go into Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) homepage and make a complaint, students can apply online and other privileges which is all available on TELS website,”Mr Reddy said.

“The primary objective of the streamlining for TELS was to provide efficiency and also reach out to those applicants outside Suva,” he said.

Mr Reddy added that if the student still could not find employment after the programme, then they should provide a report to the Board every six months.

The Opposition questioned the viability of students looking for gurantors for their loans arguing low-income students were at a disadvantage.  Mr Reddy blamed trade unions for spreading misinformation about the student loans.
