Love is still in the air for couples Kalisito and Veniana Tuidomo, 42 years on.

As the world celebrated Valentine’s Day yesterday, the couple of Reba circle in Nadera, Nasinu, and both aged 70, shared their love story and how they have made it this far.

They married at the Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Nadera.

Mr Tuidomo from Tama, Nakorotubu in Ra was then a messenger with the Public Service Commission while Mrs Tuidomo from Wainilotulevu village in Namosi was a senior counselor at the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre.

After their wedding, the couple moved to Ra and spent their marriage years there. They moved to Nadera five years ago after Mr Tuidomo suffered a stroke.

The couple yesterday reminisced on how they usually celebrated Valentine’s Day during their younger years.

Mrs Tuidomo was also a former head of housekeeping at various hotels on Denarau in Nadi before marrying Mr Tuidomo. She said her experience in the hotel industry enabled her to understand the spirit of Valentine’s Day and how they used to celebrate it.

The couple spent the day at home. Mrs Tuidomo spoke lovingly of her husband and hugged him tightly holding a red rose to remember the spirit of Valentine’s Day.

“My husband is a soft and kind hearted man compared to what I am. I am always strict with everything that’s done at home and with our family welfare,” she said.

“We have been married for 42 years and what enabled us to come this far was the love we had for each other. We’ve always loved and respected each other.”

Her love for husband remains strong despite Mr Tuidomo’s illness.

“We promised each other that we will look after each other no matter the circumstances and now that he’s sick I am not going to let go, I am going to look after him to fulfill him the promise we made 42 years ago,” Mrs Tuidomo said.

She advised younger couples to respect, love and share things with one another to ensure their marriage last. They have three children and 10 grandchildren.
