Open- heart surgery patients at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital were beaming with smiles last Friday.

This is after the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate, and his assistant Veena Bhatnagar, visited the patients on their hospital beds.

The patients were recovering after undergoing open heart surgery by the Sayadhri medical team from India.

Mahesh Chand, 52, from Buca settlement in Savusavu was among the patients.

“I am really happy and excited that they are even able to visit us even though I might be paining a bit,” Mr Chand said.

“I never even thought that they will be able to leave what they are doing to come and see us.”

Rajendra Prasad, 64 of Nadera in Nasinu said he was feeling better after undergoing the operation.

“It feels really good when they come down from their high status and see us. Their visit here today gives us strength to live life because they are able to come and encourage us to be strong,” Mr Prasad said.

Twenty-one patients had undergone open-heart surgeries since it started a week ago.

Mr Usamate said he was amazed with how fast the patients had recovered following the operation.

The Sayadhri medical team is targeting to complete 50 open heart surgeries by February 17.
