The new president of the Coral Coast & Tourism and Catering Workers Union (CCTCWU), Asesela Turagadrau, has pledged to work for members.

He was elected yesterday in the first trade union election to be conducted by the Fijian Elections Office.

The pollling station  was at the Warwick Hotel and Spa in Sigatoka.

Mr Turagadrau said: “I am very happy and I am thankful to the support given by my family and the staff of the hotel.”

“I have been working here since 2002 and this has been the first union election and my aim is to work hand in hand with the company and the workers.

“This sort of elections is good. The process is simple and easy to follow.”

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said: “This is the first trade union election that we have conducted.”

“The voter had to vote for the candidate of their preference by placing a tick in each ballot paper.

“We are very grateful to the Warwick Hotel & Spa for providing us the venue of this nature as it is a good venue.

“We haven’t had any issues that were of concern, as it had been very smooth from the morning.”

This electoral process took around six weeks to prepare and a day to complete the polling.

Mr Saneem said they had worked very closely with the union.

“There will be times when there will be some issues and the FEO approach is to approach the union to get these issues solved before we go into poll.

“There are going to be bigger elections than this that we will be holding and we are preparing for it.

“We put procedures quiet early so that unions know how to get about doing the election.”

On the mobile voting system, Mr Saneem said: “Theses workers are mostly working at Warwick so the mobile voting was not introduced here.
