The University of the South Pacific (USP) welcomed students for the 2015 academic year at its Laucala Campus last Friday.

Addressing the students, USP’s deputy vice-chancellor (Research & International), Professor John Bythell, welcomed them saying USP was owned by 12-member countries and was here to serve the region.

He said in addition to students from the 12-member countries and others outside the USP umbrella, there were international representatives from about 40 countries on campus.

“This truly is a melting pot of cultures and peoples not only from the vast expanse of the Pacific but of the world,” Professor Bythell said.

He said going to university was a major step in a student’s life because it opened up new horizons and possibilities.

“But how many of you have really thought about what it is you want and how exactly you get there. So I urge all of you to take some time, to give it some real thought and to use the wealth of resources available across the campus, speak to your tutors, staff and counsellors about your goals, your direction and the map that will guide you there,” he said.

He urged students to not only work hard but to also work smarter.

He said the fundamental difference between school and university was that at the latter, students are expected to become independent thinkers and to take control and ownership of their learning. Semester one begins on February 16.
