The Vodafone Fiji 7s team is in a better position to move up the ladder in the HSBC Sevens World Series standings today.

Fiji is currently in third spot with 64 points, behind New Zealand (69) and South Africa (76).

Ben Ryan’s men have a good chance to cut the gap when they play South Africa in the Cup semi-finals at 8.32am in the Las Vegas 7s, USA. Barring upsets, Fiji can play New Zealand in the final if the Kiwis overcome USA in the second semi-final at 8.54am.

But the Fijians need to do it right as Ryan was disappointed with their performance despite beating New Zealand 14-12 in the final pool play.

“We were stupid in that game, making silly mistakes, not sticking to our game plan,” Ryan told World Rugby.

“I know we won but we shouldn’t have been in a position where we could have lost.

“The Cup quarterfinal is up next and we must win whoever it is against.”

The Isake Katonibau-captained side responded well to defeat Virimi Vakatawa’s France 31-12.

Fiji vs New Zealand

New Zealand started well with a try to Joe Webber in the 1st minute. Fiji replied after Semi Kunatani set up Savenaca Rawaca to score.

Kunatani extended Fiji’s lead in the second half for Fiji to lead 14-7. At fulltime, Beaudine Waaka ran 60 metres to score but failed to convert his own try. Fulltime: Fiji 14-12 NZ.

Fiji vs France

Four tries to Rawaca set Fiji up for a 24-0 lead at halftime over France as the Pacific islanders turned on the flair in their Cup quarterfinal. Jean Marcellin Buttin put France on the board shortly after the break before Sitiveni Waqa added to Fiji’s lead before a late consolation to Les Blues’ Bryan Dimeck. Fulltime: Fiji 31- France 12.
