More than 500 students from Catholic schools in Labasa marched through Labasa Town yesterday to celebrate Catholic Education Week.

Holy Family Secondary, Holy Family Primary and Nabala Secondary School students marched through Labasa Town to celebrate the weeklong event.

These schools will be taking part in so many academic activities like oratory and parents and teachers meetings at their various schools.

With the theme, “Children, Precious Gifts from God”, celebration co-ordinator Mateo Naiveli said this was the inaugural celebration for Catholic schools in Labasa.

“Before the celebrate used to be a one-day event but thanks to the Catholic education office, we have been given a week to celebrate,” Mr Naiveli said.

He said the day started off with a mass at the Labasa Parish and there would be a lot of activities throughout the week aligned with the theme.

“Apart from academic activities organised inside the classrooms, we will also have a community awareness programme on Wednesday for all parents,” he said.

Mr Naiveli said it was an open forum where parents gathered at schools and discussed issues concerning their children’s education with teachers.

Meanwhile, the one-week celebration will end on March 1 with a Sunday Mass at Labasa Parish.

Guest speaker Social Welfare officer Avelina Rayasi said that the theme simply meant that everyone should work together for the safety of the future generation.
