The Fiji Under-19 cricket team play Papua New Guinea today the opening rounds of the Pepsi ICC EAP Trophy and the 2016 U19 World Cup Qualifiers.

The players and the coaching staff arrived in Blenheim, New Zealand yesterday.

The team will play against Samoa, Vanuatu and PNG with the winner being crowned the top U19 side in the East Asia- Pacific region. On top of this, the winner will also gain automatic entry into the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup to play alongside Australia, England, India and others to be held in Bangladesh in 2016.

After the PNG game, Fiji will take on Vanuatu on Wednesday and Samoa on Friday.

The team, who finishes first will be automatically crowned the winner, but will still play the fourth ranked team in a friendly match on Saturday.

The second and third placed teams will have a sudden death match also on Saturday, with the winner being crowned both runner-up and gaining a second chance to play other nations later in the year for a spot in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

“We’ve trained hard in Suva and New Zealand and are confident that with the squad and training structure we have, can put on a strong performance against the other sides”.
