Pio Manoa has switched events to be able to take part in the Coca-Cola Games on April 24-25 at the ANZ Stadium.

Manoa, 15, aims to take part in the 1500metres as it will be run on Friday as he can’t compete in the 800 metres.

“My favourite event is the 800 metres but I can’t take part on Saturday because I am a Seventh-day Adventist,” Manoa said.

“I’ve switched to doing the 1500 metres because it’s the first event of the Coke Games and finishes on Friday.”

The Year 10 student at International Secondary School feels that while most students are fortunate to compete on both days, those who are Seventh-day Adventists miss out.

“I love taking part in the 800 metres event because last year I qualified and could have taken part in the Cokes,” he said.

“I think organisers should cater for Seventh-day Adventist students as well. The Coke Games are all about showing your talent and I think that we are not given equal opportunities to showcase out talent.”

ISS annual inter-house was held at the ANZ Stadium yesterday. The winners will be announce in school today.

ISS has taken a serious approach to developing their students to take part in athletics.

Physical education teacher Jennifer Liew said students should be mindful of the importance of athletics.

“I’m very happy with what the students have done,” Liew said.

“They all have to do four events which are compulsory because athletics is the basis for every single sport they do.”
