As a military partner, the United Arab Emirates is also Fiji’s partner in other spheres of international relations, says Robin Nair.

The Fijian Ambassador to the UAE made the comment while welcoming Fiji’s Minister for Defence Timoci Natuva and other Fijian officials at his residence.

UAE would also be providing bilateral assistance for our development, he said.

“Our military policy is also an extension of our foreign policy. It builds on the contribution of our much-acclaimed military contribution to global peace and security under the United Nations Charter,” Mr Nair said.

Mr Natuva is in Abu Dhabi, at the invitation of the UAE Government.

He is accompanied by the Commander of the Republic of Miliatry Forces (RFMF) Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga, Deputy Commander Brigadier-General Mohammed Aziz, director Peacekeeping Operations Commander Humphrey Tawake and director Army Legal Services, Lieutenant-Colonel Pacolo Luveni.

The Fijian delegation attended the Gulf Defence Conference on Saturday and the opening of the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) on Sunday.

The exhibition featured the UAE Defence Industry Capabilities.

A release from UAE said the Defence Exhibition was attended by distinguished guests including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces; and the Sudanese President, Omar Al Bashir.

It said that the grand opening ceremony provided a fitting commencement for one of the world’s most strategically important defence exhibitions. Over 160 international delegations were featured in the exhibition.

Bilateral talks are expected to follow between the Fijian delegation and the UAE Armed Forces under the recently signed memorandum of understanding.
