Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy said they are rebuilding the dormitory at Queen Victoria School in Tailevu. The dormitory was destroyed in a fire in 2013.

“The burned dormitory will be renovated in two month’s time so that it will be able to cater for more than 400 students.

“Money is not a problem and we will spend about $200,000 to build a much bigger dormitory for the students,” Mr Reddy said.

He said the school roll had increased to about 1000 students and Government was prepared to provide the necessary infrastructure to cater for the students at the school

In the first week of school, we received complaints from parents whose children had been sent back home.

“We went down to the school and the teachers told us that there was no space so I went around myself to inspect the premises and we managed to turn four rooms into a dormitory,” he said.

“We have converted a vacant block into a dormitory, that is the initial step we took to address the matter,” Mr Reddy said.

Mr Reddy said the art and craft classroom was one of the rooms converted because it was vacant.

He said the four rooms now catered for about 130 students.

“We fixed the roof and put in double beds for the students and that has solved the problem for now.”

He said the dining hall was also being extended.

“We have also received complaints that there was not enough space at the dining hall so we got the school to arrange for students to have their dinner in groups,” Mr Reddy said.

“This would be a temporary measure but ministry assures to complete the extension in two months,”

Meanwhile, the ministry was also concerned with the lack of beds and beddings at Ratu Kadavulevu School also in Tailevu.

The ministry says the total cost of fixing both hostels (QVS and RKS) will be about $500,000.
