Waiqele Primary School students now have a reason to smile after their walkway was officially opened yesterday.

The Labasa Cane Producers Association paid for the construction of the walkway at the school.

Association president Mohammed Rafiq said the project cost of $21,375 was taken from the sector community development projects fund.

“These funds are part of our premium received from our sugar sales in Fairtrade markets,” Mr Rafiq said.

Last year, was quite an achievement for the Association in terms of the implementation of various educational, social and community developments.

“About 34 per cent of the total funds allocated for the Waiqele sector community development project was used by the school for the last three years.

“The Association is very happy to see that the projects implemented at the school are well maintained for the benefit of all,” Mr Rafiq said.

School headteacher Bhagwan Lal said: “On behalf of the school management, staff and children and the Waiqele community we salute them for their commitment towards the school.

“Now the students, parents and visitors have a shelter from the rain and the hot weather. Especially the students now they can walk freely after getting off from the buses.”
