The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, will soon visit the 14-year-old girl and 21-year-old woman who arrived from Papua New Guinea last Friday night.

The two Fijians returned home last Friday night after being rescued by a joint operation with Fijian residents and PNG locals in Port Moresby.

“The girls are currently under the care of the Social Welfare where appropriate action will be taken to ensure the welfare and safety of the girls,” Ms Akbar said.

“I will be visiting them later today after I meet up with the Foreign Minister from Indonesia.”

She said the ministry was currently working with relevant stakeholders to ensure child protection.

“We will continue to work with together with relevant agencies to maximise child protection and welfare of all children in Fiji. This is a concern that needs to be taken seriously,” she said.

The Minister, who is currently in Nadi, said at the moment they would not release further information on their whereabouts for their own safety.

Police investigations are ongoing.

It is alleged that they were lured to PNG by promises of money and a bright future.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Henry Brown said Police were working with the Social Welfare Department to carry out the investigation.

When contacted the Social Welfare Department said they would give more information today since they were dealing with a minor.
