Fiji Maritime Academy has achieved an important milestone after being awarded International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Certification.

This was confirmed by chief executive officer and director in charge of the academy Captain Suren Gurusinghe.

The ISO certification is only awarded to companies who have undergone stringent auditing of  procedures to meet international standards.

Mr Gurusinghe said the certification has been awarded to FMA after receiving the accolade from certifying body DNV/GL.

DNV GL is an international certification body and ship and offshore classification society, with main locations in Norway and Germany.

“The awarding of an ISO 9001:2008 certification will place any seafarers, who attend FMA, ahead of the pack when competing with seafarers from the Pacific Region,” Mr Gurusinghe said.

“FMA’s though this important mile stone, want to make sure the end users who employ graduates from the academy are guaranteed that they have employees and trainees who competent qualified and to international standards.”

Due to this new achievement, the academy will release a new brand logo whereby a new mark will appear next to the logo of the academy’s management group Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC). The academy will now join the only 20 companies to display the logo in Fiji.

“It is the only South Pacific maritime training institute to achieve it.  FMA is also the only DNV/GL certified business in Fiji,” Mr Gurusinghe said.

The new logo will be launched at a ceremony planned for March 9 at the Laucala Bay facility in Suva. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will officially re-launch a new name, logo, website, anthem for the 45-year-old training institute
