Rotuma Hospital Construction Starts

A team of 19 Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), engineers has started construction of the new Rotuma Hospital.

The commanding officer (CO) RFMF engineers, Lieutenant-Colonel Semi Mocelutu, said Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Inia Rarawa was in charge of the team of engineers.

“Altogether 19 RFMF engineers will be under WO1 Rarawa’s leadership,” Lieutenant-Colonel Mocelutu said.

He said the advance team had completed the clean-up and levelling of the site.

Construction would begin with the building of the administration block, the hospital kitchen and the mortuary.

Officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony last year, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Jioji Konrote, said the hospital was a commitment that Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama made after his visit to the island last May.

Mr Konraote said the development would fulfill the aim of Government in bringing services closer to rural and maritime people and it would commit Government to make basic health services easily accessible in rural or remote communities across the country.

The hospital will cost Government about $4.6 million.
