Sangam Primary Celebrates Festival

Labasa Sangam Primary School celebrated Holi or Phagwar festival yesterday in style with students playing the leading role of conducting a chautal.

Chautal Holi geet is the singing of Holi songs by groups during the celebration.

The school hosted its 530 students to refreshments and chautal. Chief guest Shashi Narayan said Holi could be regarded as a celebration of colours of unity and brotherhood.

“This festival is an opportunity to forget all differences and indulge in fun,” Ms Narayan said.

“It has traditionally been celebrated in high spirit without any distinction of cast, creed, colour, race, status or gender, Ms Narayan said.

“It is one occasion when sprinkling coloured powder or coloured water on each other breaks all barriers of discrimination so that everyone looks the same and universal brotherhood is reaffirmed.”

She said it was one simple reason to participate in the colourful festival.

A group of Year Six students performed the chautal.

Most Hindu-run schools across Fiji will be closed today to commemorate Holi
