Weapons Air Cargo Ban Call

Former acting director for Civil Aviation, Joeli Koroikata wants the Government to consider ratifying the Beijing Convention 2010.

The treaties include the Convention on the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Relating to International Civil Aviation 2010 (Beijing Convention 2010) and the Protocol Supplementary to the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Seizure of Aircraft 2010 (Beijing Protocol 2010).

Presenting his submissions to the Parliamentary Standing Comittee on Foreign and Defence yesterday, Mr Koroikata emphasised the importance of these laws today.

“Importantly, the Beijing Convention will require states to criminalise the transport of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons and related materials.

“Accordingly the protocol will also contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter Terrorism Strategy adopted on September 8 2006 by enhancing the global treaty regime on counter-tourism,”he said.
