The Fiji Association of Women Graduates West branch celebrated International Women’s Day with the University of the South Pacific at their Lautoka Campus on Thursday.

With the theme, ‘empower Women’ the aim of this celebration was to encourage women to set their limitations.

FAWG is the organising force for any fundraising event where funds raised go towards the FAWG scholarship project.

This scholarship pays the tuition fees of young women who undertake studies in the electrical or automotive schools at the Fiji National University.

The International Women’s Day celebration was marked to recognize the significant contributions women make in every aspect of life.

Chief Guest, Ruth Atu said, “In every woman is a unique experience that can inspire other women.

“The Government has been involved and committed nationally and internationally when it comes to the protection, empowerment and recognition of women.

“These are lifetime opportunities for women to pursue and excel leaving out the tradition that says women’s place is in the home or kitchen.”

Women face many challenges in life, whether it is at home, work place, at a social gathering or outside your own country.

FAWG Speaker Vasiti Soko said, “We are fortunate that here in Fiji the government has made education free for all.

“Women are encouraged to speak freely and most importantly enjoy freedom of movement.

“With everything that is accessible to us, women should be able to flourish in their own ways.

More than 120 women attended this event on Thursday evening to empower young women and girls around.
