The calls for women to be strong amidst the abuses they face daily were heard across the country yesterday during the International Women’s Day celebrations.

In Lovu, a settlement on the outskirts of Lautoka, National Council of Women secretary-general Fay Volatabu, told the women to continue the good fight.

“Today (yesterday) marks an end to our International Women’s Day celebration, but this does not mean it should be for us. We need to continue working towards our goal,” Ms Volatabu said.

The T.I.S.I Maartha Sangam Group hosted a workshop for the women of Lovu and surrounding areas to mark International Women’s Day.

Group national president Walliamma Swamy said it was very important for women to learn to be self sufficient.

“Having the group of women here is a very good response they get to learn to be independent by making use of things that surround them,” Ms Swamy said.

“Like farming or starting a small business, there are so many talents we need to use.

“The workshop was to ensure that women don’t have to depend on men. Most of the times we see women being physically abused in a family and some don’t leave because they think that they are not capable of doing anything.

“Which is why it is important to be independent so that you can be able to fan for yourself,” she told the gathering.

About 30 women attended the event. It ended with the cutting of a cake for International Women’s Day.
