The President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, has commended women non-government organisations (NGOs), for their role in providing health and social services to women around the country, especially those in rural communities.

The Head of State made the comments at a fundraising drive organised by Medical Services Pacific and Aspire Youth Network.

The ‘bake sale’ fundraiser held at Government House last Friday demonstrated the work carried out by NGOs to encourage more women to engage in income-generating projects.

The President encouraged them to use all opportunities available through these NGOs to carry out income-generating work.

He said that the work carried out by the two NGOs gave unemployed women the chance to make a living for themselves.

MSP chief executive officer Jennifer Poole said the event demonstrated that while women faced financial difficulties, overcoming these challenges could be addressed through collective support.

“We are selling candles and cupcakes which were made by the Phoenix Survivors Group. The group includes children who have overcome challenges, situation of violent and abuse,” Mrs Poole said.

“Women will be empowered to generate income so they are able to support their family financially and also send their children to school.”

The MSP programme seeks to provide a comprehensive range of health and social services for women and youth.

MSP works to raise the status of women and seeks to end Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and provides clinical services to women especially in rural communities.
