Rice Farmer Toils On

Eighteen-year-old Hirdesh Chand opted to leave school to look after his family’s rice farm in Wailevu, Labasa.

The farm was given to him by his grandfather seven years ago. He is the only child.

“Last year four acre of rice was planted and were harvested before the dry spell,” Mr Chand said.

“I managed to get three tonnes which had a value of $2400. It was less than what I use to get in previous years.”

His next harvest is next month – rice he planted last November.

He expects to get three to four tonnes and would be sold at $800 – $850 per tonne.
