Soroptimist International (SI) Lautoka conducted their Saturday of Service at the Sunshine Special School.

The day is marked on the first Saturday of March annually.

It is the day when members all over the world engage in service projects that improve the lives of women and girls.

National representative for SI Fiji and SI Lautoka president, Zareena Bi said it was an opportunity to raise awareness about women helping women.

“Local clubs undertake service projects year round. Having clubs participating in one event with all clubs all over the world on the same day, help to raise public awareness about Soroptimist,” Ms Bi said.

“We had undertaken to clean-up and do wall painting as our project for Saturday of Service.”

Ms Bi said the annual event was conceived and executed by nine SI clubs in the Phoenix area of Arizona, USA, in 2002.

“At its board meeting in July 2004, the Soroptimist International board of directors voted to recognise the Soroptimist Saturday of Service on the Saturday prior to International Women’s Day (March 8).”

She said it had been observed around the world. International Women’s Day is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society, and the political process of equal footing with men.

Meanwhile, today SI Lautoka will be organising the International Women’s Day oratory competition for primary schools to be held at Saru MGM in Lautoka from 8.30 – 12.30pm.

“Twenty-four schools have registered. Event sponsor is Oceania Water Group Fiji supported by FMF with director USP Lautoka, Pramila Devi as the chief Judge,” she said.
