Talks Progress On New Namuka School

The discussions on the proposed construction of Namuka Secondary School at Namuka District in Vanua Levu are ongoing.

The proposed school project was included in the Public Sector Investment Programme for 2014 to 2016, but plans to build the school are yet to be finalised.

Education officer North Letila Mataitoga said the project cost was $450,000.

This was highlighted during the opening of the Northern Division heads of government department meeting in Labasa last Friday.

“This was brought up to our attention last year, and the need for Namuka Secondary School to cater for the upper Namuka district area,” Ms Mataitoga said.

“From our last visit to Namuka, they still hadn’t made up their mind yet where to build the school. The landowning unit is the one that is giving the consent because they were the ones who wanted the school to be built at Namuka District.”

In 2013, Ministry of Education officials visited the area to conducted feasibility studies.

Acting Commissioner Northern Alipate Bolalevu asked during the meeting if land was available where the school would be built on.

“The consent should come to the Roko Tui Macuata,” Mr Bolalevu said.

“The process of de-reserving the land takes a longer, so if we can help the Ministry of Education in terms of de-reserving the land.”

Meanwhile, two infant schools in Bua will be opened later this year.

Wainunu Infant School and Kavula/Banikea Infant School in Bua are expected to open later this year. Both are under construction. The investment cost is $1.2 million.

The construction of the Nailou Infant School in Cakaudrove is in still in progress.
