Tropical Disturbance Being Watched Closely

A warning is in place for members of the public to be prepared and take precautionary measures as tropical disturbance 11 F develops far to the Northwest of Fiji.

And the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) is calling on members of the public to take heed of weather updates and make all preparations to be safe in case.

FMS principal scientific officer (Forecasting) Misaeli Funaki said yesterday that they had been closely monitoring the movement of the system.

“We have been monitoring and located it 1300 kilometres (km) North West of Nadi. The expectation in the course of the next 24 to 36 hours (since Sunday) will develop into a tropical cyclone,” Mr Funaki said.

“It can intensify and the track could move closer by midday Tuesday (tomorrow). We expect it to lie on North West as it is very slow moving – approximately a thousand kilometres just north west of Nadi.

Mr Funaki said with the current model and analysis, there should not be a direct threat.

“We have been monitoring and it does not pose any direct threat to Fiji, but we should expect active rain bands that will bring heavy rain at times with pretty much strong and gusty northwest winds and squally thunderstorms.”

He said the name ‘Fijian beast’ or the ‘Vanuatu Monster’ referred to the model term used because of the intensity closer to the eye of the system where gusty winds were expected.

Mr Funaki said it could develop into Category 3 cyclone with wind speed up to 70 knots (130 km/hr) which was likely to be at the end of the week.

“The public is advised to continually listen to weather bulletins,” he said.
